Also known as a CoD, a Certificate of Destruction is an official document issued by the DVLA. Every scrap car should have one of these certificates issued, so that the owner is no longer accountable for that vehicle.
This certificate also proves that your vehicle has been disposed of by an authorised scrapyard. Additionally, it outlines that your vehicle is no longer on the road and no longer in the owner’s possession. The DVLA will then remove the vehicle from their database and you will no longer be associated with it.
When you to choose our scrapyard in Smethwick, we will ensure that you receive a certificate of destruction for every vehicle that we dispose of. This certificate isn’t a legal requirement as such, but it is something that we consider best practice.
This document detaches your name and details from the vehicle. It is a good idea to have one of these in your records so that you can prove that you are no longer liable for the car. If your details are still associated with your car on the DVLA’s website, you may be liable to pay certain fees, such as:
If you choose to use a company that isn’t an authorised treatment facility (ATF), you may not know what your vehicle is going to be used for after you have parted with it. This is the main reason why we contact the DVLA on your behalf and get this document issued to you as soon as your vehicle has been appropriately disposed of.
Yes you do. However, we will do this all for you, so there will be no need to worry about doing this after scrapping your car. Once we have collected your vehicle and we have your latest V5C logbook, we will process all the necessary paperwork and the DVLA will issue you with a certificate for your own records. This will also be updated online.
A certificate of destruction can only be issued once your vehicle has been disposed of. Typically it can take 2-3 weeks before you receive your document.
The DVLA will send this document to the address that is linked to your vehicle’s V5C logbook. This certificate is issued by the DVLA themselves and not the scrap merchants, so another scrap merchants offer you an instant certificate, it will be fraudulent.
